Paul Lam
Hello! My name is Paul Lam and I am a member of Kiva. After taking AP Economics last year, I became really interested in how to use economics to solve social issues of inequality, and I finally found an effective way to make a difference through Kiva. I know that the best way to stimulate economies in developing countries is to support entrepreneurs. I vividly remember listening to a Kiva presentation during my freshman year, and I am glad to finally be apart of the group. I look forward to raising awareness of Kiva in my different communities because I truly believe that we can make a difference.
Service Learning Day 2 Reflection
Today was the second day of Service Learning and we began by
regrouping in the classroom to split up our work for the day. We worked on our
presentations and practiced presenting to guests from around the school who
would give feedback on how we spoke and our content. One particular story that
stood out for me today was how after we were presenting, someone said our group
was very “deadpan” and that we lacked passion for our cause. I began to
question how because I do feel very passionate towards alleviating poverty. I
made it a priority for myself to have more energy and to better communicate my
feelings toward the topic the next time we would present. I really enjoyed our
work today because we were very efficient in delegating all the work that
needed to be done today including the Kiva board, our business cards, our town
meeting presentations, and our grade level presentations that we will present
to the freshman sophomores and juniors later on in the year. I also enjoyed the
work because we got to present with each other and we all gave each other
helpful feedback, so we got to navigate through and communicate all our
differences. I felt much more connected to the community in which we are working
because we had to find specific examples of individuals on Kiva and learn about
them to present to our audience. In addition, it was difficult to present
without practicing but I am now much more prepared and have overcome this
challenge. Overall, today I learned that I really do care about this cause and
I need to be more clear about showing it. In addition, we are working on our
communication by presenting who we are to the school and what our mission is,
which we will soon finish in the future.
