Luchi Jiang: Day 2 Service Learning Blog

Today, we continued to prepare for future presentations for our group and planned for a bulletin board as well as a business card and handout that will inform the community more about our project. We broke up into small groups to tackle the tasks of planning the bulletin board, making a business card and handout, and preparing presentations for town meeting, and underclassmen grade level meetings. I was in charge of designing a business card and handout along with fellow group member, James Wang, which we will give as takeaways for the business people who we present to. I created a simple logo for the card and outlined the key points about Kiva such as describing the organization and how others can participate in making loans. Through the card and handout, we also encourage the people to spread the word to others and supporting the Sage Hill Kiva team. I learned how to deliver information through these short documents clearly and effectively and create designs that look clean.

Afterwards, we practiced our business presentations in the MMLH to a small audience of teachers and students, including a Q and A session after each presentation. This setting gave me a better feel for how the real presentations would run. The biggest critique from the audience was that we all seemed to lack energy while speaking and relied too heavily on reading from our notes so the presentation felt robotic. I felt that my speaking improved from the previous service learning day, however, I will need to continue to work on knowing my material well enough so that I can speak without relying on my notes and feel comfortable delivering it in front of an audience. We should also improve on being prepared to answer any questions that the people may have because some of the questions the audience members asked today were tricky. Public speaking has always been something that I have struggled with, so I am grateful for the opportunity through the Kiva Service Learning group to improve and learn from my peers.
